Discussions about .tel

Post by Watcher on Wed 24 Jul 2013, 10:48 am

The biggest and currently only active .tel forum is: www.TelTalk.org

The .tel registry Telnic had its own forum, but it was locked in spring 2012 by its operator.

The .Tel forum is temporarily closed.
Since we don't know when it'll reopen, it has now been redirected to this forum.

TelTalk.org

Post by mikeseaton on Mon 05 Aug 2013, 7:04 pm

It's a real shame that TelTalk.org has shut down (albeit perhaps temporarily) - there was a huge amount of useful content on there for anyone with an interest in the future of the .tel extension !

I have now joined many ex-TelTalk users in registering here.

There needs to be a place where those with an interest in the unique .tel extension can express their personal views without fear of being banned if they don't follow the party line - as happened to me (and many others) on the now "locked-down" Telnic forum at http://www.telnic.org/forum

I have always found it incredibly ironic that Telnic - who want to change the way the world communicates through the use of .tel's Data In the DNS concept - seem unable to communicate effectively with their own customers !

Another problem with the shutdown of TelTalk.org: I sent an important PM to TelFan a few days before and I am sure he did not get it...
Anyone out there who knows how I can reach TelFan now?

Sorry for the inconvenience.
After Teltalk was redirected to this forum, it's most likely that all members of .Tel stop by here.
However, once Teltalk reopens all old messages will be available again.
In the meantime I'll arrange a contact between Cubitel and Telfan.

@TelForum - why did TelTalk close - was it anything to do with that email you published that you received from Justin of Telnic a day or two before ?

Yes, it was no coincidence that I closed Teltalk one day after I received that message.
But let's leave those stories behind us.
I'm waiting for resuming development or any other good news.
If this won't happen, then Teltalk will remain closed.

@TelForum - obviously TelTalk's closure was your decision to make and we all respect that, but I don't think you actually had that much to worry about !

Some key points re that email from Justin/Telnic:

a) Written comments cannot be considered legally libellous if the facts they are stating are true !

b) There was a recent court case exonerating Twitter from similar problems - saying that as they were a "platform" it was the publishers (ie. the registered users) who were legally liable for the content of their own tweets.

c) Your identity was private in TelTalk's Whois - it would be totally impractical for Telnic to sue you without knowing your identity - even if they had a case which IMO they didn't.

d) Even if they had a case, even if they discovered your ID, what are they going to do in practice given that AFAIK you live in the USA and they are UK-based.

Just a few thoughts on the matter !

Re: Discussions about .tel

Post by Tel Forum on Tue 06 Aug 2013, 8:38 pm

The main problem is that .Tel owners will always complain about stagnancy. I can't prevent this.
My hope is that one day things will improve and hence the .Tel owners have something positive to talk about.
If this won't be the case, then I don't think it is worth the hassle maintaining a forum for one domain extension only.
.Tel has all attributes to become a big thing, but we need to see .Tel in action.
I will follow .Tel closely. As soon I see positive news worth talking about, Teltalk will reopen on the same day.

Re: Discussions about .tel

Here are some facts to consider:

  • .tel has lost a lot of registrations, but this situation can change quickly as soon the public notices .tel.
  • .tel has still more than 200,000 registrations. This number is carried by a lot of hope and it’s still remarkable for a TLD the public has never heard about.
  • The design at Telnic was invented in the last millennium and it still looks this way. With a little bit of work it would be easy to satisfy today's requirements.
  • Telnic canceled all activity, because the expectation is higher that Telnames can succeed more quickly.
  • Telnames has some deficits that would be easy to eliminate (better SEO with subdomains and better integration of text or alternatively a specialized domain directory – as many times discusses on the closed TelTalk forum).
  • In the future .tel will deliver fully developed websites as visible at the Chinese .tel providers already today.
  • In addition .tel is the only TLD that can be used for future phone services that doesn't exist yet.

Thank you for your reminder on Twitter today, Mike!
Many things need to be considered.
The communication between Telnic and Teltalk has become - let's say - more and more difficult.
But I'm not only worried about legal actions. In addition I'm thinking about the effect for the whole domain extension.

On the one hand after all active developers have left; Telnic itself develops less and less, too. I can't observe any activity by anyone since long.
On the other hand newbies will become uninterested in .tel if reading about all the past mistakes in the .tel history while no good news are in sight.

I was thinking to give .tel a break until we can observe increasing registration numbers, but I don't expect this happening during the next few years.

Re: Discussions about .tel

Post by mikeseaton on Thu 07 Nov 2013, 11:34 am

@TelForum

I, along with many others, am disappointed that TelTalk has closed its doors, for the second time in recent months.

There was such a mass of information on your forum to help both newbies and experienced users get to grips with .tel, including the development situation by Telnic/Telnames which is important for all to understand so that hopes are not raised then dashed !

With the redirection of TelTalk's pages to another forum the original posts we all spent a lot of time creating are now rapidly being de-indexed by Google, which means the thousands of existing links from blogs etc to interesting articles will now be dead links, creating a feeling that .tel is going nowhere !

I do believe you had nothing to worry about legally by continuing to run TelTalk and that its closure is harmful to the long term prospects for the .tel extension - .tel needs all the publicity (even controversial posts) it can get with nearly 2000 new gTLDs coming along soon !

Can I suggest that if you are not going to re-instate TelTalk now - which it appears you have decided against - that you put the TelTalk forum up for sale ?

As I believe it is ESSENTIAL that the .tel extension has a forum NOW that allows FREE SPEECH (stating something that's true is never considered "libel") I will be making my future .tel posts at TelDomains.biz - hopefully others will join me there soon !

Good luck in whatever you decide to do in the future TelForum !

Re: Discussions about .tel

Generally speaking Telnic requested to delete all content on Teltalk not being in the interest of Telnic.
Furthermore Telnic didn't say what content is unwanted, only that I will be liable personally for any damages happening to .tel.
I'm at a loss how to operate the forum under these conditions.

And I don't want to delete any adequate feedback only because the company who decides about success or failure of .tel doesn't like it.
I would like to reopen Teltalk, but I need to see that .tel is still worth it.

Should the situation improve, Teltalk will be live again immediately!

@TelForum - is there any chance you could redirect the TelTalk posts to http://www.TelDomains.biz whilst you decide what to do with TelTalk ?

Perhaps you also might like to join myself and other .tellers there ?
